Stan Wawrinka v Sumit Nagal Head to Head
This will be the very first time Nagal takes on Wawrinka in his career, having played Roger Federer last US Open.

Wawrinka Continues to Be Stretched
Two matches played in this tournament, and Wawrinka has had to endure successive three-setters against opponents ranked around 200th in the world. And in both matches, he was able to ramp up his game in the final set to clinch the final set 6-1.
After a first round bye, Wawrinka edged out Roman Safiullin in the second round before defeating Oscar Otte in the second.
To be fair to Wawrinka, most players coming off such a lengthy layoff, having last featured in a tournament in Acapulco in February, would find themselves in bit of a pickle early in competitions like these.
Sure, the opponents haven’t been very high-pedigreed and could have been dealt with accordingly, but Wawrinka had neither played an exhibition match during this pandemic break like most others, nor played on clay since the French Open of 2019. That’s more than 14 months of no clay court matches and he has managed to show his class and seal his quarterfinal place.
Expect him to notch up an extra gear going into the rest of the tournament.

Nagal at Career-Best
Irrespective of the result of this match against Wawrinka, India’s Nagal will enter the US Open at his career-best ranking of 121st (or better) in the world. And that’s testimony to his fighting spirit given the kind of start he had to the season and the lack of any meaningful tennis during the tennis break too.
Still, Nagal, who had a first round bye, has managed to come through to the quarterfinal on the back of a couple of smart performances.
In the first, he was leading Great Britain’s Jay Clarke 4-1 in the final set when his opponent retired from the match because of injury. The second round encounter against Jiri Lehecka proved to be another indicator of that same spirit as he fell behind a set and 2-4 down in the second.
Nagal fought back to get the break of serve which pushed the set into the tie-breaker. He won that and then clinched the match in the third 6-3.
With the Indian having given Roger Federer a run for his money at the first round of the 2019 US Open – winning the opening set – he will now look to dish out something similar to the second-ranked Swiss player.
Stan Wawrinka v Sumit Nagal Prediction & Tip
It’s tough to look beyond Wawrinka and not surprisingly, he is a whopping 1/4 to win this with bet365. Nagal, however, can be expected to push the Swiss a bit and will hope to take a set off him.
Tip: Wawrinka to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
