Sloane Stephens v Caroline Garcia Head to Head
Three previous matches have led to Garcia winning two of them and Stephens clinching one. However, their previous encounter in 2018 came on clay, while their only hard court encounter came in the Fed Cup of 2014 which Garcia had won.

Stephens in Form Crisis
Discount Stephens’ performances in the World TeamTennis – and those weren’t too great to write about anyway – and you have a year in which the American has won a mere two main draw matches in WTA events.
Stephens, a former US Open winner and world number three around that time, begun her season with four back to back losses. At times, bad form can be blamed on luck of draw but in this case, Stephens’ defeats came at the hands of Luidmila Samsonova, Arina Rodionova, Shuai Zhang and even the 189th-ranked Renata Zarazua.
She finally won a match at Monterrey but went down to Leylah Fernandez in the second. That win has, so far, been her only WTA match won this season as on resumption she crashed to another straight set defeat in Lexington to Fernandez.
The American has shown what she is capable of in the past but even in 2019, her win-loss record on hard court surfaces – where she has won five of her six titles – was a poor 10-13.

Garcia Playing Maiden Match on Resumption
The 49th-ranked Garcia is herself a former world number four but like Stephens, has unable to recapture some of her glorious past. She did win a title in 2019, on the grass of Nottingham but other than that she ended the season with 22 wins and 27 defeats.
Even this year, Garcia’s record has been underwhelming – albeit a tad better than Stephens. At Auckland she made the second round before losing to Eugenie Bouchard, and then went down to Ons Jabeur in the second round of the Australian Open.
There were opening round losses in three of the tournaments she participated before the first part of her season ended with quarterfinal appearance at her home tournament in Lyon. Since then Garcia hasn’t played a single match, either as a part of the exhibition series or on the WTA tour and that rustiness could become a big factor.
Sloane Stephens v Caroline Garcia Prediction & Tip
Stephens might be struggling but Garcia’s lack of match practice could play a role here. Backing the American to win at least a set here.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
