…however, in the only match played on hard court in an exhibition tournament in Germany, Khachanov lost in straight sets to Jannik Sinner. He would however, hope he can take some of the form he had shown at the start of the season into this competition.
In the inaugural edition of the ATP Cup, Khachanov won the first four matches he played before losing to Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic. He also made the third round at the Australian Open and was involved in a five-setter against Nick Kyrgios that could have gone either way.
In the end, Kyrgios pouched it in the final set tie-breaker, leaving fans to savour what was arguably the match of the tournament.
A quarterfinal at Dubai wrapped up his pre-pandemic season but now he will be raring to go in a bid to return back to both, his best and a top-10 ranking. He starts off with a relatively easier opponent than some of the others in round one.

Bublik at Home on Hard Court
Ranked 51st in the world, Bublik did not have the best of starts to the season. In three of the four tournaments he played at the beginning of the year, Bublik lost in the second round while in the fourth, the Australian Open, he was knocked out in the first.
Bublik’s comeback came in Marseille Open where he defeated Benoit Paire and Denis Shapovalov to reach the semifinal of the competition. He lost to Stefanos Tsitipas in that match.
A second round exit at Dubai brought him back to those typical results from earlier in the season but a couple of victories in the Davis Cup could have been a good springboard for the rest of the season had it not been for the pandemic.
Since then he has participated in the Friendship Cup where Bublik won seven of his 11 matches on clay.
