Watson Inching Back to Her Best

Before the season was stalled due to the pandemic break, Watson had shown the best was still in front of her. The 28-year-old, with a career-best ranking of 38th in the world, made it to the main draw of the Hobart International through a couple of qualifiers, before racing off to the semifinal.

She defeated Jil Teichmann, Fiona Ferro and Elise Mertens on her way to the semifinal, losing to Elena Rybakina at that stage. While her campaign at the Australian Open ended in the second round she came back with a bang at the Acapulco Open, winning the title to make it her fourth WTA tournament win.

During the break, Watson participated in the Battle of the Brits competition and in the team event, she won all her five singles matches against fellow countrywomen. She dropped just one set in the process.

What was then surprising to see was her crushing first round loss at the Lexington Open but credit where it’s due and Jennifer Brady is in some of the finest form of her life. Losing to her might have taken some of that shock away.

Pera Aiming for Career Best at Cincinnati

Having played in the previous editions of the Cincinnati Open, Pera has never gone beyond the first round. Her best in Premier tournaments has been a third round presence at the Madrid Open while on hard courts, she has made the second round at Wuhan and Qatar Open.

More recently, Pera started off on a solid note in the Lexington Open against Serena Williams. She won the first set in that opening round match and while the champion player responded with two strong sets, Pera would be reasonably proud of her showing.

Unfortunately though, hard court isn’t Pera’s most preferred surface. At the lower tier, her best year came in 2017 when she ended the season on a 54-20 win-loss record. On clay she was 35-8 while on hard courts, it was 19-12. And even that was one of her best showing on that surface.

Heather Watson v Bernarda Pera Prediction & Tip
