Alex De Minaur v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

De Minaur leads the head to head 2-0 against Struff with both of those matches having come on hard court surfaces. In the first at the 2018 Indian Wells Masters, De Minaur needed three sets and two tie-breakers to carve out a tough win before winning in straight sets in the Basel Open quarterfinals.

Struff Not at His Best on Hard Courts

The German 30-year-old is closing in on his best ATP ranking of 33rd, but has this gigantic task ahead of him on hard court surfaces given his record on it. Over the last five seasons, Struff’s best win-loss record on hard courts came in 2017 where he ended the season with 13-12.

This year he has won five of his nine matches on this surface, showing some signs of bit of resurrection. There were a couple of straight-set wins in the ATP Cup, a second round appearance at the Adelaide International and then a quarterfinal in Dubai where he excelled.

However, during the pandemic break, Struff appeared in five tournaments and of those three were on clay. The one tournament in which he played on indoor hard courts, Struff survived one match, losing to 42-year-old Tommy Haas in straight sets.

Can he shrug off those results and get going here at the Western & Southern Open?

De Minaur’s Barely Played This Season

Before the tennis season went into a tail-spin because of the pandemic, De Minaur had surprisingly featured in only two tournaments. An abdominal injury forced the Aussie to withdraw from his home Grand Slam and the few tournaments after that.

In total, he began the season with four matches at the ATP Cup (where he was 2-2 on win-loss) and finished up at Acapulco where he lost his first match to Miomir Kecmanovic despite being a set.

During the break, the only tournament De Minaur played was at the Valencia Challenge. It was on clay and while De Minaur won both matches, it will be a far cry from the challenge he faces on the hard courts of New York. His opponent here might not be the toughest but if and when he progresses ahead, things are likely to get that much more challenging with the lack of match-time under his belt.

De Minaur’s goal going into the US Open, would be maximise that and start feeling confident yet again.

Alex De Minaur v Jan-Lennard Struff Prediction & Tip

De Minaur is 8/15 to win this match and while we think he should enter the second round, it might not be a straightforward win. Expecting a three-setter in this match.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 11/8 (bet365)
