This will be the first match between Cornet and the 124th-ranked McNally.

Cornet Needs to Arrest the Rankings Fall
From being a world number 11 at one stage in her career, Cornet’s career graph hasn’t looked as appealing as it promised then. Her win-loss record over the past few seasons read: 26-27 in 2015, 28-23 in 2016, 25-24 in 2017, 27-26 in 2018 and 29-26 in 2019.
This is a far cry from a player who has six WTA titles in her career, including one as recently as in 2018 at Gstaad.
And that’s the other issue. Cornet has always preferred clay to hard court, and in recent times her record on the latter has deteriorated. Over the past two seasons, for instance, she has won just 25 of her 53 matches on hard court surfaces.
The good news is Cornet enters this tournament with a lot of match practice under her belt. She featured in four tournaments during the pandemic break, all of which came on hard court and that should allow her to enter this match and tournament without worrying of rustiness from lack of tennis.

McNally Showing Early Signs of Promise
18-year-old McNally has been ear-marked as one for the future having begun her career as recently as a couple of seasons ago. Her career-best ranking is yet to top the 100-mark, but as far as WTA tournaments go, she has had a couple of strong showings already.
Like last year, McNally made it to the semifinal of the Washington Open before losing to Camila Giorgi. Later in the year, McNally also entered the Houston Open quarterfinals, where she went down to Kirsten Flipkens.
And over the last two Grand Slams that she has played, McNally has entered the second round at both, the US Open last year and the Australian Open earlier this year. The talent’s there, and it’s now about clicking in that one tournament to give her the confidence in herself.
