2020 season had started on a terrible note for the 25-year-old Italian. He lost five back to back matches to start off his campaign and had to wait till the third week of February to register his first win of the season. So a forced break due to the pandemic worked out quite nicely for him.
He worked a lot on his fitness during the break and took part in the Italian Athletics Championships as well as the Italian National Tour, winning both the events. Although those events were played on his preferred clay courts, the feeling of winning again must have done his confidence a world of good.
If he wants to move up the rankings chart, he will have to improve his performances on the hard courts. And improving upon his first-round exit from Cincinnati last year would be an ideal way to start.

Sandgren Looking to Break into Top 50 Again
The 29-year-old American had a fantastic start to the 2020 season when he shocked everyone by reaching the last eight at the Australian Open.
He went out to Roger Federer in a tough five-setter but it looked like that it was a matter of time before he would break back into the top 50 rankings once again.
An early exit from New York, however, and an injury cut short his progress before the season was halted.
Sandgren has been one of the busiest players during the time when the season was suspended. He has been playing in multiple exhibition events and has played close to 20 matches during this time.
This week is a great opportunity for him to go further than first round at the event. If he progresses further, he is slated to meet the top seed Novak Djokovic in the third round

In terms of the rankings, there isn’t a huge gap between the players. But the comfort of playing on hard courts and form gives a clear edge to the American.
Although Sonego has been playing well recently, his record on the fast hard courts is below par. Whereas Sandgren relishes the surface and looks ready to go into the US Open strongly.
