Marton Fucsovics v Norbert Gombos Head to Head
Experienced players Fucsovics and Gombos have been around for a while and have played each other thrice already. All of those three matches came at the lower tier, with Fucsovics leading the head to head 2-1. However, this will be their first meeting since 2014.

Once ranked 31st in the world, the Hungarian Fucsovics came through to the main draw of this tournament with back to back straight-set wins. And this comes on the back of a rather interesting year for Fucsovics.
If you look at only his performances towards the second half of the pre-pandemic season, you would wonder why interesting. After all, Fucsovics crashed out of the Rotterdam Open, Marseille Open and Dubai Open in the first round.
It was what had transpired before that which makes it bit of an unforgettable phase. Fucsovics, who had ever made the fourth round of a Grand Slam competition once in his career before 2020, defeated Denis Shapovalov, Jannik Sinner and Tommy Paul at the Australian Open to emulate that feat.
And then in the round of 16, Fucsovics took the first set off Federer before going down in four sets. Even before that, as a qualifier he had made it to the quarterfinal stage of the Qatar Open.

Gombos Scrapes Through to the Main Draw
Every now and then in recent times, Gombos wins a main draw match on the ATP circuit but his best performances over the past few years have been reserved for the Challenger circuit. Gombos won a couple of those even last year, as a 29-year-old, making it 10 career titles.
This year Gombos’ best showing came at the Montpellier Open where he defeated Emil Ruusuvuori and Pablo Carreno Busta to make it to the quarterfinal. That aside, he has played in a lot of exhibition tournaments during the lockdown but all of them on clay.
What that meant was it became a tough route to the main draw at New York. He needed three sets to get the better of Stefano Travaglia and then another toughie against Soonwoo Kwon which saw two tie-breakers.

Fucsovics is an overwhelming favourite to pocket this one given his preference for this surface as compared to his opponent who is bit of a clay court player. Gombos’ fighting spirit will shine through even if it doesn’t help him win the match.
