David Goffin v Borna Coric Head to Head

This is bit of a one-sided rivalry but one that hasn’t been renewed in four years now. Between 2014 and 2016, these two players faced off four times and Goffin won every match. To be fair to Coric, he put up a fight in three of those including once at the Davis Cup where Coric took him to five sets before Goffin clinched it 6-3 in the final set.

Goffin’s Underwhelming Start to the Year

Goffin hasn’t had the best of seasons this year and the break might have come at a decent time. Despite winning three of his four matches in the ATP Cup, and reaching the third round of the Australian Open, the next three tournaments on indoor courts did not go as well as Goffin would have liked.

The Belgian had a first round bye at Montpellier and he won a couple of matches to make it to the semifinal there. He went down to Vasek Pospisil at that stage.

If one thought things could only improve from there on, a straight-set loss to Jannik Sinner in the second round at Rotterdam put paid to those wishes before he lost the first match he played at Marseille.

During the pandemic break, Goffin participated in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown competition and while he did make it to the semifinal after winning five of his nine group stage matches, he was unable to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas (twice), Dominic Thiem and Matteo Berrettini.

Coric Eases Through to Round Two

Coric might have faced off-court criticism and he might have gotten involved in an online spat with Nick Kyrgios but it doesn’t look like it has bothered him too much. Taking to court for the first time since playing in a couple of exhibition matches, Coric did not drop a single game in his win against Benoit Paire.

He led 6-0, 1-0 in his opener before Paire retired from the encounter with an injury.

That result, and its manner, would have come as a huge relief for Coric who has had struggles right throughout the season. A couple of defeats at the ATP Cup, a first round loss at the Australian Open, and then a bye in Buenos Aires followed by another loss meant he needed some results going his way.

While he did make it to the semifinal at the Rio Open, Coric looked far from convincing there and this win against Paire should boost morale greatly.
