Diego Schwartzman v Reilly Opelka Head to Head

Two previous outings between these two players have led to one win apiece for both these players. In their first match at the Montreal Masters, Schwartzman needed three sets to get past Opelka in the first round. Two years later they met again in Miami and this time, Opelka won in three sets, coincidentally needing a 6-4 in the final set, to level the head to head.

Schwartzman Makes Easy Entry to Round Two

The Argentine might be the ninth seed in the competition but he is more of a clay court player than a hard court one and has never progressed beyond the third round here in Cincinnati. The good news for him came in the form of his first round opponent, Casper Ruud, who himself hasn’t set the world on fire on hard court surfaces.

Which is why Schwartzman, despite having not played since his participation in Buenos Aires in February, was able to come away with a straight set win over Ruud. He won 7-6, 6-3.

It won’t be the same against Opelka. Although ranked 39th, Opelka has already won more hard court (including indoor hard court) titles on the ATP circuit than Schwartzman. This is not to say the Argentinian world number 13 is a pushover on this surface, far from it.

After all, it was not so long ago that Schwartzman made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open and while he wasn’t able to push the world number one so much, not too many players have done that anyway against the Serb.

Opelka Unbothered by Norrie’s Form

One expected Cameron Norrie to provide bit of a match to Opelka when the two met in the first round of the Cincinnati Open. This was based out of the Brit’s form during the off-season but it turned out to be a damp squib.

The American art-lover and a resident of Florida did not show any love for Norrie in their opening round match, winning 6-3, 6-4 to move into the second round. In a match that saw Opelka face just two break-points, he saved both and broke his opponent once apiece in both the sets to win the encounter.

Opelka’s tall-serving made it next to impossible for Norrie to get back into the match as he faced 18 aces from the 6’11” American. And that’s where Schwartzman will need to be rather wary of.

The Argentine, himself standing at just 5’7″ makes this probably the match between one of the shortest and one of the tallest male tennis player and that could make it one of the more exciting ones to watch.

Diego Schwartzman v Reilly Opelka Prediction & Tip

There’s not much to choose between these two but we are backing Opelka to spring a surprise here. The Argentine will have a tough time breaking serve and that could mean we see a couple of tie-breakers – or close to that – in this match.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
