Maria Sakkari v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head
This will be the third time Sakkari and Putintseva will be facing off in a competitive match having earlier played in 2016 and 2017. Putintseva won their opener in Tokyo in straight sets before Sakkari made it 1-1 in Wuhan in a tough three-setter. Both matches were played as first round encounters.

Well, technically one cannot call it a shock if the player winning a match is more than 40 places above the loser but in this case not too many would have given Sakkari a chance against Gauff. Gauff in an upcoming and an extremely talented teenager who has already accounted for few of the top players and all eyes have been on the way she has grown as a player.
So much so even bookmakers had tipped Gauff to win that one, offering 1/2 for the victory.
Sakkari threw those odds out of the window with a pummeling, a 6-1, 6-3 rout of the precocious teenager and moved into the second round. The win assumes even more importance given it came on the back of a similar rout which Sakkari had been at the receiving end of on her return to tennis after the break in Palermo.
Kristyna Pliskova had sent her packing in straight sets in the opener over there. Now, with her confidence restored, Sakkari will be a tough opponent for most.

Putintseva Hoping to Improve on Lexington Showing
Having made her return to the sport after the pandemic break at the Lexington Open, Putintseva started off well there with a 6-0, 6-4 drubbing of Ajla Tomljanovic. However, Jil Teichmann wasted no time in getting past Putintseva in the second round of that tournament.
Her opening round match against Shuai Zhang, however, had her tipped to be a favourite which is how it turned out. The Kazakh player needed just two sets to move past Zhang.
What’s interesting to note is she has already made the third round at the Australian Open and third round at the Qatar Open this year. The players at the receiving end at those tournaments were Danielle Collins and Elise Mertens, two of tennis repute.
Which is why Sakkari will do well to not take Putintseva for granted going into this one.
