Alexandrova Improving Each Year

Having won her maiden WTA title in 2016 in Limoges, she made it three in four years between then and 2019 at that competition. Now Limoges, while technically been a tournament under the auspices of WTA, is a $125k event and at a level lower than the WTA Internationals too.

Which is why when Alexandrova clinched the Shenzhen Open trophy at the start of this year, beating Wang Qiang, Garbine Muguruza and Elena Rybakina, it would have sparked a sense of belief and relief in the Russian.

She made the third round at the Australian Open, her best performance at that tournament and joint-best in a Grand Slam and broke into the top 25 of the WTA rankings. A semifinal at the St. Petersburg Open followed before an early loss at Dubai ended her pre-pandemic season.

Interestingly, she was drawn to face 17th-ranked and favourite Rybakina in her opening round tie here in New York and registered a 7-5, 7-6 win to seal her second round berth.

McHale Shocks Swiatek

Having fallen to 90th in the world, the one-time 24th-ranked McHale needed to go through the qualifiers to make it to the main draw of the Western & Southern Open this season. She overcame the one-time world number 10 Daria Kasatkina in the second round of the qualifying before facing up to the 51st-ranked teenager Iga Swiatek in the first round.

Swiatek was 1/3 to go through to the second round and not only did McHale defy those odds but also registered a crushing win 6-2, 6-4 to make it through.

This comes on the back of an otherwise listless season for McHale in which she lost her openers at the Hobart Open, Australian Open and the Indian Wells $125k event. There were a couple of wins here and there but her quarterfinal appearance at Acapulco remains her best showing for the season.

Having played in the World TeamTennis, there was obviously no rustiness in her play but now come the tougher matches and the one-time 24th-ranked player will need more than just experience to get through.

Ekaterina Alexandrova v Christina McHale Prediction & Tip

Alexandrova has shown enough form to suggest she might not be stretched by McHale here and should go through to the third round without trouble.

Tip: Alexandrova to win: 2/5 (bet365)
