Elise Mertens v Veronika Kudermetova Head to Head
These two players have played each other once before this and that came on the ITF circuit with Mertens winning in three sets.

Those quarterfinal appearances at the Shenzhen Open and Hobart International were followed by a fourth round at the Australian Open for Mertens earlier this season. And that’s the kind of form which has remained with her even after the return of the sport from the pandemic.
She was the finalist at the Prague Open week or so ago, losing to Simona Halep and if anyone had any doubts over the switch to hard court surfaces of New York, Mertens has quickly dispelled them with a couple of fine performances.
First she dispatched Rebecca Peterson in straight sets, dropping just two games in the process and then in the second round when she was faced by a challenge from Kristina Mladenovic, Mertens dug deeper and found herself a solution.
After dropping the second set in a tie-breaker to Mladenovic, Mertens carved out a three-set victory to proceed to the third round.

Kudermetova Stuns Top Seed
The Russian is close to her career best ranking and after making it to the third round in Cincinnati, she can expect to improve a tad more having fallen in the second round last year in this competition. And what a way it has been for Kudermetova to get to round three.
If beating Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round was a task for the Russian, she came back strongly to demolish top seeded Karolina Pliskova in the second round, winning 7-5, 6-4 to register the biggest shock of the tournament so far.
And it wasn’t all easy for the Kudermetova either. Down 4-1 in the first set, she rallied to win six of the seven games and pouched the first set and then came back from 3-4 down in the second to clinch the match without dropping any more games.
Kudermetova admitted after the match the long encounter with Tomljanovic helped her to get back into groove and the win over Pliskova will also go a long way given the fighting nature of the match.

Mertens, while the higher-ranked player and a favourite will do well not to go into this match with any sort of complacency. Kudermetova is a player on the rise and the confidence could take her places.
