David Goffin v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head
A rivalry that loves its base in Metz has now moved its location to New York for the Western & Southern Open this time. Before this, there have been five matches between these two players, of which Goffin has won four and Struff has one win. Two of those wins for Goffin have come on the indoor courts of Metz, and a couple others on the hard court of the Miami Open and the US Open.
Struff’s only win over Goffin came in their last meeting at the Barcelona Open last year on clay.

Goffin Stretched But Through in Straight
Egged on by fellow countrywoman and tennis legend Kim Clijsters in the stands, Goffin displayed composure at crucial times to come through in straight sets in his second round match against Borna Coric.
In a first set that changed directions many times, Goffin was stretched to a tie-breaker which he edged out 8-6. That, according to the Belgian turned out to be the turning point of the encounter, as he never lost serve after that. And while the second set wasn’t a runaway either, Goffin closed out the match 7-6, 6-4 to clinch a third round place.
This was Goffin’s first ATP match since having lost back to back matches at Rotterdam and Marseille right at the end of the pre-pandemic season.
Having made the semifinal at Montpellier and the third round at the Australian Open as his top draw performances, Goffin would like to push a tad further here and in Struff has an opponent who hasn’t done too well on hard court surfaces.

Struff Shock for Shapovalov
As mentioned earlier, Struff’s record on hard court surfaces doesn’t hold much of a candle to his own clay court showing but he still managed to complete two wins in a row on it for the third time this year.
Having earlier stunned Australia’s Alex De Minaur in straight sets in the first round – and he was 8/5 to win going into that match – Struff had some confidence going up against Shapovalov. And when he took the first set of this second round match in a tie-breaker, the belief would have soared high.
While Struff lost the second set, his life learning would have helped him through here too as he came in late to win the third set and match. The German has been a late bloomer, making the top 100 of the rankings for the first time at the age of 26.
Since then it’s been an impressive story for Struff who has improved to a career-best of 33rd in the world, and now having emulated his best Cincinnati Open performance, he would be itching to go one better.
David Goffin v Jan-Lennard Struff Prediction & Tip
A Goffin win looks certain but what looks even more certain is a Struff fight. Which is why we reckon this might not be as straightforward as the odds of 4/7 for a Goffin win suggest.
Tip: Struff to win a set – Yes: 4/7 (bet365)
