Sabalenka Survives Bellis Test

It was never expected to be an easy match and as we had thought, Bellis did end up giving Sabalenka a scare. In the end, however, Sabalenka’s experience and toughness shone through as she came back from a set down to clinch the third round berth.

In a match full of swinging fortunes, the 2018 Cincinnati Open semifinalist needed two hours and 20 minutes to come through to a 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 win.

Sabalenka could well have had it easy. She had five set-points in the first set but Bellis staved them off to take it in a tie-breaker. In the second, the Belarusian earned her break of serve at 3-2, and held on with ease to close out the set, in turn signalling a change in fortunes.

Bellis was broken twice at the start of the third set and while she came back to level things off at 4-4, Sabalenka crashed into her party by breaking her to love in the 11th game of the set. The world number 11, who had lost in the second round at the Lexington Open to another teenager, Cori Gauff, completed the win with an easy hold after that.

Qualifier Pegula Making a Stunning Move

Ranked 83rd in the world, Pegula has one WTA title under her belt and was earlier this year a finalist at the Auckland Open where she lost to Serena Williams in the final. However, having moved to the third round here in Cincinnati means this is now her best performance at any Premier level tournament, having just made the second round on one previous occasion at Indian Wells before this.

And she has done that in some style.

After defeating Varvara Gratcheva and Luidmila Samsonova in the qualifiers, she shocked the much-favoured and dark horse Jennifer Brady in the first round. Even that straight-set win wasn’t enough to tip her as a favourite when she took on another American Amanda Anisimova in the second but another easy victory followed.

Pegula won 7-5, 6-2 to set up this meeting with Sabalenka.

Aryna Sabalenka v Jessica Pegula Prediction & Tip

No prizes for guessing who the favourite is, Sabalenka starting out at 1/2 to win this. However, Pegula could make it very difficult for her and push this into a third set.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
