Osaka Wins Her First Match Since the Australian Open
The 2020 Australian Open looks like a distant dream at the moment.
Even more so if, as a favourite, you were knocked out in the third round. And more so if you didn’t play any WTA competitions after that, losing a Fed Cup encounter in the interim.
That’s how it was for Osaka going into her second round tie against Karolina Muchova, and she took her time getting a feel of the conditions. And Osaka credited the win to her calm attitude, which helped her overcome the loss of the first set to finally win in two and a half hours of gruelling tennis.
After initial breaks of serve, both players held serve in the first set before it went into a tie-breaker. Muchova, who had registered just one top-10 win before this, won it 7-5. The second set started with an early break of serve for Osaka and this time around she never came close to losing it and once she had levelled things off there was no looking back for the two-time Grand Slam winner.
Osaka raced off to another 2-0 lead in the third set and once she had doubled her break, she finished off her opponent 6-2 in the final set.

Yastremska in a Third Three-Setter in a Row
Yastremska was one of the favourites at the Palermo Open when tennis resumed earlier in August, but she fell in the quarterfinals there. Losing that match in three sets to Camila Giorgi, Yastremska has now been pushed to three sets in both her next two matches here in Cincinnati.
And on both those occasions, Yastremska has shown enough tenacity to win the match and exhibit she could be a force to reckon in times to come. The Ukrainian, who has already pouched three WTA titles, including two on hard courts, but she is still waiting for that breakthrough performance at Premier level and Grand Slam competitions – a quarterfinal in Wuhan Open last year being her best so far.
Wins over Venus Williams and Bernarda Pera here in New York should go a long way in helping her with the kind of self-belief one needs in trying to usurp an opponent like Osaka.
