Mertens on a Roll Since Palermo Shocker
Mertens wasn’t expected to roll over as quickly as she did in the first round of the Palermo Open, which is probably why it comes as a surprise to many she has been able to win eight of her ensuring nine matches.
Her only loss came in the final of the Prague Open on clay where she went down to Simona Halep.
And despite switching over from clay to the hard courts of the Western & Southern Open in New York, her form has remained largely untouched. Sure, Mertens was tested and taken to three sets by Kristina Mladenovc, but she came through that second round match and then registered a crushing third round win over Veronika Kudermetova.
The Belgian won 6-2, 6-3 to set up this last eight meeting with surprise quarterfinalist Pegula.

Pegula Stuns Sabalenka
Pegula’s career best ranking is 55th and she has since fallen 28 places to outside the top 80. This is despite making the final of the WTA Auckland at the beginning of the season because of some poor form during the pre-pandemic season.
However, since featuring in the World TeamTennis during the pandemic break, Pegula went on a eight-match winning streak and while she lost her second round match at the Lexington Open, it did look like she could do a lot better.
Pegula has now come through a couple of qualifying rounds, and then stunned Jennifer Brady, Amanda Anisimova and Aryna Sabalenka to make it to the last eight. The last of her wins came against the Belarusian Sabalenka, who has already won a WTA title this year and seven in her entire career.
Beating Sabalenka takes her to her maiden Premier 5 quarterfinal, and the fourth of the season in a WTA event.
Interestingly, Sabalenka and Mertens are doubles partners in this tournament, so the question now is if Pegula can take both of them out.
Elise Mertens v Jessica Pegula Prediction & Tip
It’s one thing beating Sabalenka who was showing signs of raggedness despite having won her previous match but quite another to now overcome an in-form and properly dialled in Mertens. Expecting Mertens to pouch this in straight sets.
Tip: Mertens to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
