Markéta Vondroušová v Greet Minnen Head to Head
This will be the first time these two players will feature in a WTA competition having once played at the ITF level. In that match played on indoor hard court, Vondroušová had made a mincemeat of her opponent, winning 6-1, 6-0 in the qualifiers.

A long layoff from the tour because of an injury was followed by a short return and the suspension of the tour due to the pandemic. And amidst all this, Vondroušová’s form has been forgettable.
A lot more is obviously expected out of Vondroušová now that she is the reigning French Open finalist, but she needs bit of a rhythm here. At one stage, at the start of the season, it looked like Vondroušová had gotten back into the groove immediately on return when she dropped just three games across two rounds at the Adelaide International.
However, a straight-set loss to Ash Barty in the quarterfinal of that tournament began a run of five losses from her next six matches.
It obviously didn’t help that the tour was suspended before the clay court season could kick-start earlier this year, but the good news is she has played in a plethora of exhibition tournaments during the break. It didn’t quite help her on Vondroušová’s return when she fell to a three-set defeat in the Cincinnati opener, which could make this first round match a vital one for the Czech 21-year-old.

Minnen’s Never Seen the Top 100
While the Belgian is currently close to her career-best of 103rd, her own ambition would be to break into the top 100 and go further up. But for that to happen she needs to better her performances in the main draws of WTA competitions.
Take this year for instance. Minnen’s played in six competitions and made the second round at only one. Of the remaining, there were three futile attempts at making the main draw itself.
What’s surprising is Minnen hasn’t played in any lower circuit competitions or exhibition tournaments all year either which makes it doubly tougher to get into the rhythm of things. So while Vondroušová has her own issues to mind, Minnen will have to crank up her up a few more notches to get past her opponent here.

Vondroušová starts a favourite while Minnen will look to take advantage of the fact her opponent is a tad rusty along with the obvious preference for clay courts. Might see three sets in this match.
