Yastremska Shows Early Form But…

…it’s been a strange sort of a year for the Ukrainian world number 25. Other than the Adelaide International in which Yastremska made it to the final, she has been unable to deliver the killer blow at the latter stages of the competition.

Yastremska had won two titles last season, but this year she has been waiting for her first. At the Australian Open, for instance, Yastremska bowed out in the second round. That was followed by a first round loss at the Dubai International before she went on a three-tournament run in which she showed the early glimmer but three matches into the competition she has lost almost unexpectedly.

At Doha, just before the break, that defeat came in the third round to Garbine Muguruza. Then there was a quarterfinal loss at Palermo in the first tournament after the pandemic break. And then in the Cincinnati Open recently, after wins over Venus Williams and Bernarda Pera, there was a stunning straight-set loss to Naomi Osaka.

Which makes her very dangerous in these early rounds here but can she live up to the promise and go deep into the second week of the US Open?

Doubles Specialist Astra Looking to Make a Mark in Singles

Astra’s best performance in Grand Slam tennis was a second round appearance at the 2019 Australian Open. That was her first appearance in Grand Slams but following that there have been four successive opening round exits.

With a career-best ranking of 85th in the world, she is currently more than 40 places behind that mark and it’s down to her poor showing all year. It started with successive first round losses at the Hobart International and the Australian Open, and a failure to qualify for the Acapulco Open.

Going into the Monterrey Open as a qualifier, she made the main draw there before winning her first WTA match of the season. It turned out to be her only win so far this year.

Following the break, Astra Sharma featured in the Cincinnati Open qualifiers where she won and lost one to bow out before making the main draw.

With umpteen number of withdrawals from the women’s singles draw, Astra has been fortunate to make a direct entry into the first round of the US Open this season but her fortunes seem to have ended there having drawn one of the most promising players in the women’s singles draw.
