Sofia Kenin v Yanina Wickmayer Head to Head
This will be the second meeting between the 4th-ranked Kenin and the 146th-ranked Belgian, who beat the American in the Round of 16 at Oracle Challenger-Indian Wells in 2018. Since then the two have seen their careers go in different directions, with Kenin touching great heights, while Wickmayer struggling with injury and poor form.

Kenin Will Look To Put Cincinnati Behind Quickly
A child prodigy who went on to realize her dream of winning a Grand Slam title at a very young age: That’s Sofia Kenin in a nutshell.
Runner-up at the 2015 U.S. Open girls’ championship, Kenin had a great start to 2020, becoming the youngest American to win a Grand Slam since Serena Williams won it in 2002.
Her road to the title in Melbourne wasn’t easy but she brushed aside opponents with her aggressive brand of tennis which won the admiration of the world.
Having eased past some of her earlier opponents, Kenin defeated Cori Gauff in the Round of 16 and the hard-hitting Ons Jabeur in the quarterfinals, before causing the biggest upset of the tournament by beating home favourite Ashleigh Barty in straight sets in the semifinals. She needed three sets to dispatch Spaniard Garbine Muguruza in the final and realize a dream that she had been seeing since the age of 5.
Following the major success, Kenin had two disappointing outings in Dubai and Qatar before going on to capture her fifth WTA title in March by winning the inaugural Lyon Open. With tennis suspended for five months due to the pandemic, it will be interesting to see if Kenin can hit the same form that she displayed before the pause.
Her first outing since resumption of tennis was disappointing, though, as she lost to Alize Cornet at the Cincinnati Open in the Round of 32 earlier this week.
Kenin will look to put that disappointment behind quickly and hit the ground running at the U.S. Open by bringing out her A-game against Wickmayer. If she passes the first hurdle she will be up against 2010 runner up Vera Zvonareva or Leylah Fernandez in the second round.
If things go as predicted then Kenin could be facing No. 27 Ons Jabeur in the third round and No. 16 Elise Mertens in the fourth. If she keeps advancing, there could be a potential quarterfinal against fifth seed Aryna Sabalenka or ninth seed Johanna Konta.
Born in Moscow, Kenin is 15-6 this year and would like to improve on that come Monday.

Out-of-Form Wickmayer Will Find it Tough
A former World No. 12, Yanina Wickmayer was the semifinalist at the U.S. Open in 2009. The 30-year-old has been a regular face at the Grand Slams since 2008, but has not been at her best over the last few years seeing her slide to 146th rank in the world.
The winner of five WTA singles titles, Wickmayer, who is 13-9 year to date, failed to qualify for the main draw in Palermo and Prague this month. Before the suspension of the tour, she had some decent results at the ITF circuit, reaching two quarters and a semifinal in February. At the Australian Open, she failed to get past the second round of qualification, falling to American Ann Li.
The last of Wickmayer’s WTA singles titles came in 2016, when she won the Washington Open. Since then the results haven’t been encouraging for her on the Tour, although she did manage a few titles at the ITF circuit.
It will need a massive effort from the Belgian to advance from the first round at Flushing Meadows.
