Madison Keys v Timea Babos Head to Head

This will be the fifth meeting between the seventh seed Keys and the 101st ranked Babos. The American leads 3-1 head to head, however, the two haven’t met since their last meeting in Birmingham four years ago, which Keys won in straight sets.

Can Keys Win Her Maiden Grand Slam?

Ever since she won her first WTA title in 2014, Madison Keys has been a consistent performer on the Tour, and has looked good in the majors as well. But so far it’s been a story of so close yet so far for the 25-year-old American.

At the Australian Open, she reached the semifinal in 2015 and quarterfinal in 2018. At Roland Garros, she made it to the semis in 2018 and the last eight in 2019, while at the U.S. Open she finished runner-up in 2017 and reached the final four in 2018. Despite making it so far in so many majors, a Grand Slam title still remains elusive. Can she do it this time around? There is a good chance she can, particularly with so many high-profile withdrawals from the tournament.

Keys had a brilliant start to the year, reaching the final of Brisbane International by beating Danielle Collins and Petra Kvitova in the quarterfinal and semifinal respectively, before losing an engaging three-set final to Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova.

In Melbourne, Keys dominated the first two rounds, but couldn’t get past Greece’s Maria Sakkari, bowing out of the third round. That would be her last appearance before the Tour suspension. In her only appearance since the resumption, she failed to match the strokeplay of Ons Jabeur in the Round of 32 of the Cincinnati Open, losing in straight sets.

Ousted by Elina Svitolina in the fourth round of the U.S. Open last year, the World No. 13 Keys could face the resurgent Garbine Muguruza in a potential fourth-round clash this year. If she does get through, she could be facing Serena Williams in the quarterfinals.

But first the focus will be on Babos for the hard-hitting five-time WTA title winner, who is 6-3 this year.

Babos Faces an Uphill Task

A doubles specialist, Timea Babos has already tasted Grand Slam success this year, winning the women’s doubles event at the Australian Open with France’s Kristina Mladenovic. The pair also won the title in Melbourne in 2018 and at Roland Garros last year.

In 2018, they were also in the final of the U.S. Open but finished runner-up to the Aussie-American pairing of Ashleigh Barty and CoCo Vandeweghe.

With 23 WTA doubles titles, Babos is considered one of the best doubles players of recent times, but her singles record hasn’t been the greatest. The 27-year-old does have three singles titles on the Tour, but is 4-8 in 2020. Her singles Grand Slam record isn’t the greatest either with her best performance being a third round appearance in the U.S. Open in 2016.

While much can be expected from her in doubles, it will be a huge ask for her to upset Keys in the opener on Monday.

Madison Keys v Timea Babos Prediction & Tip
