Johanna Konta v Heather Watson Head to Head
There have been three previous matches between Konta and Watson before this and the world number 15 Konta has won them all. In the first, played on the ITF circuit, Konta led 4-0 before Watson withdrew from the encounter and that was followed by two straight-set wins at the 2017 Indian Wells Open and 2018 Nottingham Open.

After three back to back tournaments at the beginning of the season in which Konta was knocked out in the first match she played, the Brit has seen some success in two of the next three.
She would be particularly chuffed with her showing at the Cincinnati Open given it’s at those very courts she would be playing at the US Open. It’s one thing making it to the semifinal but the three matches she did win were all in straight sets, including one against Maria Sakkari.
Sakkari had come into that encounter on the back of an upset win against Serena Williams but fell 6-4, 6-3 to the Brit. While Konta did squander a set lead against Victoria Azarenka in the semifinal to eventually lose in three, there is no stopping the confidence she would have attained from her overall showing in this competition.
Earlier, Azarenka had been knocked out in the first round at the Lexington Open which makes this showing a testimony of her bounce-back-ability.

Acapulco Winner Watson Searching for Form
A semifinalist at the Hobart International, and a title-winner at the Acapulco Open earlier this year, Heather Watson looked like she was off the blocks rather well for the season. And then the pandemic struck and brought the tennis season to a grinding halt, making it tougher for players who already had the momentum to get going again.
Watson did participate in the Battle of the Brits team event where she won all five of her singles matches but other than shrug off some of the rust they didn’t help her achieve too much given they came against very low-ranked opponents.
Which should be no excuse for her back to back first round losses at the Lexington Open and the Cincinnati Open; going down to Jennifer Brady and Bernarda Pera. Brady won in straight sets while Watson finally managed to win a set against Pera but couldn’t finish it off.
Watson will now have a chance to avoid making it a hattrick of losses this season and four in a row against Konta but the task looks a challenging one.
