The American teenager was expected to resume her tennis season in Lexington but withdrew from the tournament because of a shoulder injury leading to question-marks over her fitness for the US Open. The good news for Anisimova was she managed to shrug off that fitness trouble to participate in the Western & Southern Open.
She started off brightly too, defeating Alison Riske in straight sets in the first round but Jessica Pegula then got the better of her in the second.
And that, unfortunately has been the story of Anisimova this season. The story of inconsistency.
The American had started off her season with a bang when she reached the semifinal of the Auckland Open where she lost to Serena Williams. However that loss was followed by two more defeats, at the first round at the Australian Open and WTA Dubai.
And that was followed by a third round appearance at the Qatar Open where she had to withdraw from the competition with a gastro issue. Can she now start off strongly as she prepares to face the likes of Maria Sakkari and Serena in the latter stages of this tournament?

Tomova’s Maiden US Open Appearance
Tomova hasn’t played too much tennis at the WTA level this year and her best showing at any Grand Slam has been a second round appearance at the Wimbledon in 2018. At the US Open, this will be her first time in the main draw.
The Bulgarian, who is yet to see the inside of the top-125 in the WTA rankings, has won just one main draw match at the WTA circuit this season, making the second round at the Lyon Open. Where she makes up for that is she has already made it to two ITF finals, winning of them and then went on an eight-match winning streak at the Eastern European Championship during the pandemic.
Question is whether it will help her garner anything out of her opening fixture against Anisimova or is it just a matter of too huge a gap in the pedigree of these two players.
