Putintseva Keeps Putting in the Early, Gritty Performances

In the seven tournaments Putintseva has played this season, she hasn’t made it to the quarterfinal of even one. And yet, she has done enough to keep pegging away, keep winning matches and keep remaining a tough opponent at times.

Since returning from the pandemic-induced break, Putintseva has played in both the hard court tournaments held on the WTA tour, the Lexington Open and Cincinnati Open, and won a round in each. Then, faced with a superior opponent, she has gone down in straight sets.

However, earlier this season in Doha, Putintseva had registered one of her two big wins of the season, defeating Elise Mertens in the second round there before losing to Belinda Bencic in the third. The other stunning result came at the Brisbane International where Putintseva stunned Donna Vekic in the opener after making it to the main draw as a qualifier.

She will now look to ease into the second round having drawn a wild-card ranked outside the top 500.

Teenager Montgomery in Her First Year

She is 16 and has played just one WTA tournament before this. It was a wildcard entry she got into the qualifiers of the Cincinnati Open earlier last week and she lost her opener there.

Before that, Montgomery’s only competition this year came in March at the Las Vegas ITF, and she won five matches in a row to lift her maiden title at that level. Her claim to fame apart from that is she was a winner of the Orange Bowl tennis competition played in the US in 2019, joining the likes of Caroline Wozniacki, Anett Kontaveit, Sofia Kenin, Bianca Andreescu and Coco Gauff in the process.

Having started playing professionally only last year, Montgomery is a highly-talented individual and will be looking at experiences like this, featuring in her first ever Grand Slam, not to mention straightaway in the main draw, to grow as a player and in the rankings.
