Jan-Lennard Struff v Pedro Martinez Head to Head
This will be the second time that the pair will play each other in a competitive match. Their only prior meeting was four years ago on the clay courts of Barcelona where Struff won in the qualifying rounds.

Struff a Dark Horse This US Open?
The 30-year-old German is playing as good as he has ever played in his career. He had a brilliant 2019 season where he reached the fourth round of the French Open, his best Grand Slam showing.
This was followed by his best personal run at the Wimbledon and reached the fourth round at Indian Wells too. He won five times against top 10 players last year and achieved his highest ever career ranking at 33.
And after a patchy start to the 2020 season, he seems to be getting back to his best. He played in three exhibition events last month and looked sharp and ready at Cincinnatti.
He reached the last eight there whilst beating Alex De Minaur and David Goffin along the way. Although a straight-sets loss to Novak Djokovic ended his run there, he caused the Serbian a few problems too.
His best showing at the US Open has been the third round appearance he made two years ago. And this year he will be certainly looking to match that. He is also currently ranked 34 in the world and just one short of his best ever. So a new career-best ranking is also something that he can achieve at the Flushing Meadows.

Martinez Looking to Cause an Early Upset
If Stuff is playing the best tennis of his career, the same can be said about his opponent too.
The 23-year-old Spaniard is currently enjoying his highest ever ranking and has played some impressive tennis this season. He started the year by reaching the second round at the Australian Open where he started from the qualifying round.
There have been three other ATP events this season where he started from the qualifications stage and reached the round of 16. He was unfortunate to not reach the main draw at the Cincinatti Masters last week but he has a great chance to win another match at a Grand Slam this week.
Although Martinez is predominantly a clay court player and his record on the hard courts still needs improvement, he certainly has it in him to cause Struff problems.
Jan-Lennard Struff v Pedro Martinez Prediction & Tip
This match is likely to be closer than what the rankings of both the players suggests. Martinez is a dangerous player on his day whilst Struff himself is playing some really good tennis. Though the German is likely to have enough, in the end, to go through,
Tip: Martinez to Win a Set – Yes: 4/5 (bet365)
