Marie Bouzkova v Jessica Pegula Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between Bouzkova and Pegula and both have come at the lower tier. Bouzkova won both, once in 2014 on hard court and the second one clay two years ago.

Just prior to the suspension of the tennis season because of the coronavirus pandemic, Bouzkova looked to be building some steam in her tennis. With wins over Wang Yafan and Johanna Konta, Bouzkova reached her first ever WTA final at the Monterrey Open in March before losing to Elina Svitolina and that was despite having had her struggles in the main draw of tournaments before that in 2020.
Bouzkova would have preferred the season to continue at that stage but it doesn’t look like things have affected her that drastically momentum-wise. At Lexington, which was Bouzkova’s first tournament since the pandemic lockdown – having not played a single exhibition match – the Czech stunned Konta yet again before routing Anna Blinkova in the second round.
A loss to Jennifer Brady followed but she followed that up with another third round appearance in the Cincinnati Open. This time around, fellow Czech and Grand Slam winner Petra Kvitova was sent packing before losing to Anett Kontaveit.
In short, Bouzkova has the weapons to push the best of opponents, it’s just a matter of doing that consistently.

Pegula Showing Her Own Excellent Form
After having won her maiden WTA title last season, Pegula has had a solid follow-up year in 2020.
First she made it as far as the final of the Auckland Open where she lost to Serena Williams. And then on return from the pandemic break, Pegula first qualified for the main draw of the Cincinnati Open and then stunned Jennifer Brady, Amanda Anisimova and Aryna Sabalenka in three successive matches to enter the last-eight stage.
On her day, Pegula is a difficult player to beat but at the same time there have been occasions where she has fizzled out early in tournaments. Like at the Australian Open where she lost her opener. Or the ITF Nicholasville competition where she bowed out in the second match. This is what explains her low ranking of 83rd in the world as compared to the career-best of 55th.
This is also why it’s tough to predict things might go with her.
