No. 13 Seed Expected To Make Clinical Start
2019 was a breakthrough year for Chile’s young Cristian Garrin. The 23-year-old depicted his strong skills on clay, winning two ATP titles at Houston and Munich and being a runner-up in Bavaria. Garrin broke into the top 40 last season and looks to have carried on his good form this year too.
After an indifferent Australian Open where he had a first week loss to Milos Raonic, Garrin came back to win the title next week at the Cordoba Open. Not only was it another title on the clay for the Chilean, but he also defeated clay court specialist and Argentine home favorite Diego Schwartzman in the final on his way to the title. This was followed by his first ATP 500 title at the Rio Open which saw him break into the top 20 of the ATP rankings for the first time ever.
Garrin will be looking to start his US Open on a strong note, as he hopes to make a mark on the hard courts and in majors in general.

Little Known Blanch Looking For First Slam Win
American Ulises Blanch is not a household name and has been on the ATP Challenger tour for two seasons winning two titles thus far. Of Puerto Rican descent, Blanch was on the junior tour for a while and ranked as high as number two on the tour.
This will be his first ever match at a major, and his debut on the ATP tour. Although Blanch will feel the nerves of being at a Grand Slam for the first time ever, he will be looking to play without much pressure, given little to no expectations from him.

Garrin was in some of the best form of his short career thus far, right before the pandemic. Although clay is his preferred surface, the Chilean will be eager to make his mark on other surfaces too. Seeded 13th, the Chilean will be looking to make the most of his draw, and looking for a strong start to the tournament. His lesser known opponent, in the absence of fans, will be hoping to brush off any pressures of being at the US Open, but it is difficult to see him posing much of a threat to the Chilean.
