Tormo Had a Poor Start to the Season

It wouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise for those who have watched Sorribes Tormo play over the years seeing her capitulate from one defeat to another at the start of the year. Known for her fondness for clay courts, Sorribes Tormo struggled in the first quarter of the year with tournaments played on hard surfaces.

As a result, a first round loss at Shenzhen kick-started her season and that was followed by a qualification and subsequent defeat in the first round at Hobart and two more such defeats at Acapulco and Monterrey. Her only saving grace from being completely bagelled as far as winning main draw matches came at the Australian Open where she won her opener against Veronika Kudermetova.

Since the pandemic break, Tormo has played in four tournaments, two of which were exhibition competitions and the others at the WTA circuit. All four, on clay. And there was the most notable change in the results as she won both the exhibition tournaments, and made the quarterfinal at the Prague Open.

Now, she is back on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows.

Liu a Former Junior World Number One

Just 20 years old, Liu has already created a buzz for herself at the junior circuit with a Wimbledon singles title in 2017, following a doubles title at the same competition a year before that. She has gone on to excel at the ITF circuit after that, winning four titles and finishing runnerup at two others.

Interestingly, for a player who had done exceedingly well on grass as a junior, won all her ITF competitions on clay. Those two runnerup trophies came on hard court surfaces.

Liu has already made the second round at the US Open once before as well – in 2018 – but did not have the best 2019 when she fell in the first qualifying round at three of the four majors and didn’t participate in the fourth.

Now she returns to the US Open as a 238th-ranked player, with a couple of ITF finals under belt and an opponent struggling on this surface. Can Liu turn things around for herself?

Sara Sorribes Tormo v Claire Liu Prediction & Tip

The difference in the ranking could be the reason for Tormo starting out as a favourite here, with bet365 offering 1/2 for her win. We think it is more even-stevens than that and Liu could actually surprise her opponent here.

Tip: Liu to win a set – Yes: 4/6 (bet365)
