Stefanos Tsitsipas v Maxime Cressy Head to Head

Tsitsipas Through in Fine Style

If one thought Albert Ramos-Vinolas had the pedigree to challenge Tsitsipas in the first round of this US Open, they were wide off the mark. It took all of 98 minutes for the Greek to tame Ramos-Vinolas, winning 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 on court 17 to move into the second round.

Tsitsipas played a near flawless game, earning seven breaks of serve out of the 14 opportunities he got and hitting 38 winners. Even more stunning was the fact he faced no break points over those three sets and while he could improve upon his unforced errors court (26), Tsitsipas couldn’t have been more pleased with his effort.

The Greek had entered the tournament on the back of a semifinal appearance at the Cincinnati Open; a bitter-sweet result considering he lost to Milos Raonic in the semifinal in straight set. While a win against Vinolas-Ramos might not act as a balm to that result, it should give him some confidence.

What Tsitsipas needs to be a tad wary about is his first round opponent looked out of sorts, as has been the case throughout the season and sterner tests will lie ahead. Then again, Cressy might not be one of those difficult opponents either.

Cressy Overcomes Kovalik

We had tipped Cressy to come through against his first round opponent Jozef Kovalik and he did so in fine fashion. Sure he dropped a set and at one point things looked like they could be headed either way when it was 2-2 in the third set after both players had won a set.

Cressy then gave himself a decisive break of serve in the fifth game of the third set, and clinched the set without losing his serve again 6-4. In the fourth set, Kovalik overturned a 3-1 lead to go 4-3 up but Cressy then stormed back to win three games on the bounce to finish the encounter with a forehand volley.

What’s exciting about this win for the American is it’s Cressy’s first main draw victory at the ATP level this season. More vitally this is the first time ever in his career he has won a match at a Grand Slam; a cause for a definite celebration but also an indicator how much steeper the task gets for Cressy now that he is facing Tsitsipas.

Stefanos Tsitsipas v Maxime Cressy Prediction & Tip

The gulf in the class of the two players can be seen from the odds on offer, with Tsitsipas at 1/40 to make the third round with bet365. A straight-set win offers better odds of 2/7 which is what we think is the best we can extract out of this one.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win in three sets: 2/7 (bet365)
