Denis Shapovalov v Kwon Soon-woo Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the 21-year-old Canadian and the 22-year-old Korean.

Shapovalov Ousts Korda

It was a bit of a mismatch with World No. 17 Shapovalov taking on World No. 205 Korda in the first round, but the promising American put up a spirited fight, taking a set off the 12th seed on his Grand Slam debut.

With Korda winning the second set and leveling the match at 1-set apiece, Shapovalov fought back by raising his game to close out the contest in four. The lefty needed 2 hours and 47 minutes to win the “tricky” contest 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Canadian, who made it to the final of Paris Masters last year, has been a decent performer at the U.S. Open in his short career. He reached the fourth round on debut in 2017 and followed it up with two third round appearances.

At the Australian Open earlier this year, Marton Fucsovics beat the 21-year-old in the first round.

Coming into the tournament with a 5-8 losing record in 2020, Shapovalov will be hoping to turn around the fortunes by improving on his best performance in the majors. And going by the first match, he could well be set for a deep run.

He hit 13 aces and won 83% of his first serve against Korda. However, one aspect that he would be concerned about is the conversion rate of break points. Shapovalov won only 4 of 14 (29%) break points in the first round, something that he would like to improve on against his second-round opponent.

Kwon Rallies To beat Kwiatkowski

World No. 73 Kwon Soon-woo rallied from a set down to oust America’s Thai Son-Kwiatkowski in the first round on Monday. The Korean took 2 hours and 50 minutes to score a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Kwon, who won 6 break points in the match, had 51 winners compared to Kwiatkowski’s 33. He also committed just one double fault, compared to the four by his opponent.

So far it has been a good 2020 for Kwon, who has featured in as many as 5 quarterfinals this year.

At the Australian Open, though, he was edged out by Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round after a tough five-set contest.

Denis Shapovalov v Kwon Soon-woo Prediction & Tip

Kwon will put up a fight, but expect Shapovalov to win this contest in four sets.

Tip: Shapovalov to win in four sets: 2/1 (bet365)
