After all Sevastova has herself been struggling to come to grips with the season. Before going into her opening round match, the Latvian had played eight matches on outdoor hard court surfaces across different tournament levels and lost all eight.
It isn’t the kind of record you want to take into a match against a youngster who is tipped to take on the mantle of greatness at some stage. It took just over two hours and the loss of a set but by the end, Sevastova had found her rhythm and winning formula back as she came through 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
In a tense final set, things went on serve till the ninth game when Sevastova held to go 5-4 up before Gauff faced four match-points on her own serve. Sevastova converted the fourth one to enter round two.

Another Teenager Kostyuk Lies in Wait
While Kostyuk is ranked 137th in the world and was facing the 70th-ranked Daria Kasatkina in her first round match, it was the former who started off as a favourite. The reason? Simply because of her own form at the lower-tiered circuit has been excellent, but more importantly because of Kasatkina’s lack of results.
And that’s exactly how things went in Kostyuk’s opener as well.
The teenager broke Kasatkina six times as compared to losing her serve just once and with 22 winners under her belt, Kostyuk coasted to a 6-1, 6-2 win over the Russian.
One other factor to look at is Kostyuk is another of those young, talented prodigies who at 15 years and six months became the youngest in 22 years to have won a main draw match at the Australian Open in 2018. As a qualifier she had gone all the way through to the third round before falling to Elina Svitolina.
That was her only main draw win at a Grand Slam before yesterday.
