Yulia Putintseva v Vera Lapko Head to Head
This will be a first meeting between these two players.

Putintseva Beat Youngest US Open Debutante on Monday
Yulia Putintseva recorded a fairly straight-forward 6-1 6-3 win over 15-year-old Robin Montgomery in the first round on Monday. The wild card entrant from the United States was the youngest player in either singles draw, and she was given a harsh dose of Grand Slam welcoming by the experienced Kazakh.
The number 23 seed Putintseva was largely dominant throughout the match despite suffering a blip in the second set in which she trailed the young gun briefly. She kicked it into another gear and ran past an opponent who was making her very first appearance at WTA tour level.
At 5 ft 4 in, Putintseva is one of the shortest players on either tour, but she has made up for her lack of height with admirable fighting qualities on the court. She is arguably also the most fiery player on the WTA tour.
After a career-best season in 2019 which yielded a maiden WTA title in Nuremberg and multiple victories over former world no.1 Naomi Osaka (one of which came at Wimbledon), Putintseva is looking to achieve a significant milestone at this year’s US Open.
The Moscow-born world no.35 will now try to equal her career-best showing at Flushing Meadows which was a third round in 2019. Her best Grand Slam result is a quarterfinal – achieved twice, in 2016 and 2018 at the French Open.

Lapko Benefiting From Protected Ranking
With four Belorussians toiling in the women’s singles draw, it is certainly not a foregone conclusion for either one of them to reach final Saturday. The most accomplished of them all, Victoria Azarenka, is tipped by many to go on a deep run given her surprise triumph at the Cincinnati Masters just a few days ago and she is certainly the one player with all the momentum coming to New York.
The likes of Aryna Sabalenka, Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Vera Lapko are names unlikely to strike fear onto their opponents. Lapko in particular, arrives at the US Open short on fitness and match wins.
The 21-year-old is a former junior world no.1 who enjoyed an excellent junior career, and looked set for success on the senior tour after finishing 2018 with a 39-24 win-loss record. Lapko broke inside the top-100, peaking at no.60 in the WTA rankings.
However, the Belarusian startlet suffered from a reported low immune system and a serious knee injury which sidelined her for over six months. She has won a total of eight matches across two years (including her opening round win over Viktorija Golubic at the US Open).
Putintseva v Lapko Prediction & Tip
Putintseva despite being undersized, has made a career of snuffing and neutralizing the power-hitting players. Lapko’s record over the last two years doesn’t inspire confidence and backing the Kazakh is the only smart choice here.
Tip: Putintseva to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
