Sofia Kenin v Leylah Fernandez Head to Head

This is the first time ever Kenin and Fernandez will be facing off in a competitive encounter.

Kenin Off to a Flier

The world number four from USA needed just 68 minutes in her first round to take on Yanina Wickmayer and seal her second round spot with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. In the entire match, Kenin faced just five break-points but saved all of them and more vitally needed just four break-points to break her opponent four times.

33 winners punctuated Kenin’s play, and there were only 15 unforced errors, a figure that underlines her solidity and clinical nature. And while she can be expected to be tested as the rounds go by, it’s this kind of play that should give her a lot of confidence.

Especially given Kenin’s return to tennis following the pandemic hadn’t been too great. After getting a first round bye in the Cincinnati Open last week, Kenin was sent packing by Alize Cornet in the second round in straight sets.

It was a matter of rustiness for Kenin by the looks of things in that tournament given she had ended the pre-pandemic season on a high – the Australian Open winner pouching the Lyon Open with ease.

Fernandez’s Maiden Major Main Draw Win

The Canadian is one of the teenagers in the main draw of the US Open this year and by winning the first round Leylah Fernandez has made it to her first ever second round match at a Grand Slam competition.

Currently at her career-best ranking of 104th in the world, she can expect to break into the top 100 very soon given the points she would collect from a second round appearance here. That, however, might not be at the forefront of what she might be thinking at this stage.

More likely, she would be enjoying the moment, and preparing for one of the toughest tennis battle of her short career – one against the world number four and the reigning Grand Slam champion. Fernandez would like to take her opening round win over Sloane Stephens at the Lexington Open as a confidence-inducer, something which would have helped her get past Vera Zvonareva in the opener here too.

Fernandez was a straight-set winner, 6-4, 7-5 over the Russian.

Kenin v Fernandez Prediction & Tip

It looks like a straightforward win for Kenin but the exuberance of youth might see Fernandez push the second seed for a bit at the start. Expecting an over-games market to be a good one for this.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
