Elise Mertens v Sara Sorribes Tormo Head to Head

At the WTA level, there has been only one match before this between these two players and Mertens had won that Luxembourg Open opener 6-0, 6-2. However, before that at the ITF circuit, Tormo had registered a win over Mertens in 2014.

Mertens Breezes Past Siegemund

There were no scares for one of the pre-tournament dark horses, Mertens, as she ran off to a 6-2, 6-2 pounding of Laura Siegemund in the first round here.

Having made it to the final of the Palermo Open on clay and then quickly adapted to the hard courts of the Cincinnati Open to feature in semifinal there, Mertens was a convincing favourite starting out in her opener against Siegemund and that’s exactly how she played.

In a match that lasted an hour and 27 minutes, Mertens saved all of the nine break-points she faced against her opening opponent, and despite hitting just nine winners to Siegemund’s 18, came through easily. Where she scored over the German was the paucity of unforced errors, just 15 of them, and a better first serve which won her 30 points.

For a player looking to emulate her fourth round run at the Australian Open, Mertens has come out with the kind of display you would expect from a player supremely confident of her capabilities. With a few minor tweaks here and there, the 16th seed could be looking at a second successive last-eight run at the US Open.

Tormo Dispels Hard Court Doubts

Given her record on hard court surfaces this season, Sorribes Tormo knew she had a point to prove against wild-card entrant Claire Liu. In fact, even we had tipped Lu to win a set in this match but Tormo came through in straight sets.

While Tormo did need more than 100 minutes on court, and was broken thrice in her 6-2, 6-4 win, a straight-set victory on a surface where she had won just one main draw match this season prior to this will also give the boost she needed. Incidentally that win had also come in the first round of a Grand Slam – the Australian Open.

Sorribes Tormo had a solid quarterfinal showing on clay at Prague before this competition but now faces a tough one in the form of Mertens.

Mertens v Tormo Prediction & Tip

Such is the gulf in the class of the two players at the moment, bet365 is offering 1/10 for a Mertens win – too short for our liking. Instead, we will go with a games handicap on a Sorribes Tormo win.

Tip: Games Handicap Tormo +6.5: 8/11 (bet365)
