Milos Raonic v Vasek Pospisil Head to Head

Despite achieving higher ranking status, Raonic has a losing record against Pospisil (3-4) in their series. But at tour level it is the former world no.3 who has the edge (2-1).

Pospisil won the pair’s last meeting in Antwerp in 2018.

Few players have endured injury nightmares quite like Milos Raonic who underwent hip surgery in 2011, foot surgery in 2015 and wrist surgery in 2017. However, he is healthy again, and after coming off a Western & Southern Open final appearance last weekend (his fourth at Masters 1000 level), the 29-year-old returned to the top-20 in the ATP Rankings for the first time since August 2019.

The big serving Canadian took out a handful of established stars including Dan Evans, Andy Murray, Filip Krajinovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas before falling to world no.1 Novak Djokovic for the 11th time in a row.

Seeded at no.25 at this year’s US Open, Raonic continued to roll as he dismantled Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer in his opneing round match. He hammered 14 aces, won 90% of first serve points and did not face a single break point in the entire contest. Such was his dominance.

The 6-foot-5 giant has now improved to 6-1 since the tour’s resumption, with all six wins coming at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in the past 11 days. With no points to defend this fortnight after missing the 2019 US Open edition, Raonic has got a real chance to surpass Denis Shapovalov and regain his status as Canada’s No.1 player.

He will next face fellow countryman Vasek Pospisil.

Pospisil Making Headlines Off Court

While Milos Raonic was cruising in his opening match, Vasek Pospisil had to dig deep to beat Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber in a tightly contested encounter. Eventually he prevailed 7-6 7-5 7-6, hitting an impressive 23 aces, winning 85% of first serve points and converting three break point chances.

Pospisil’s return to the top-100 has been one of the feel good stories of this truncated 2020 season. At this time last year, he was just making a comeback from back surgery which he underwent in January 2019 to repair a herniated disc.

His ranking dropped as low as no.248 at one point, but he pulled himself up with a strong finish on the Challenger tour, winning titles in Las Vegas and Charlottesville. He was also instrumental in Canada’s Davis Cup campaign in the absence of Felix Auger-Aliassime, steering them to the final after winning three of his four singles matches.

The one-time former world no.25 has made all the headlines off court with his backing for a breakaway players association called the Professional Tennis Players Association, and as such, he has resigned from his position as a player representative on the ATP Players Council.

Raonic v Pospisil Prediction & Tip

We are bound to get at least one tiebreaker in this one. Three of their last four matches have featured at least one breaker, and given both player’s big serving it should come as no surprise. Raonic though is likely to get the better of his compatriot in this one.

Tip: Over 36.5 games in the match: 8/11 (bet365)
