Jordan Thompson v Mikhail Kukushkin Head to Head

The 32-year-old Kazakh is 1-0 head to head after the 26-year-old Australian pulled out with an injury in the third set of their only previous meeting at Indian Wells three years ago.

Thompson Sees Off Gerasimov

World No. 63 Jordan Thompson advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam for the second time in his career after the Australian defeated Belarus’s Egor Gerasimov 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in 2 hours and 45 minutes in the second round on Wednesday.

Thompson, who reached the Round of 32 at Roland Garros last year, had a similar pattern in both the rounds at Flushing Meadows this year. In the first round as well, Thompson won the first two sets, then lost the third before closing out the match in the fourth against Italy’s Stefano Travaglia.

Thompson, who defeated top seed John Isner to reach the quarterfinals of the New York Open earlier this year, struck eight aces without a single double fault against Gerasimov. The Aussie converted five of 14 break-point chances and made just 29 unforced errors compared to the 51 by his opponent.

Coming into the tournament with a 4-5 win-loss record this year, Thompson will be looking to extend his stay till the second week of the competition but will be wary of his next round opponent, who knocked out the 13th seed on Wednesday.

Kukushkin Upsets Garin

On Monday, 13th seed Christian Garin lost the first two sets against American Ulises Blanch, before making a strong comeback to win the gripping 3-hour-and-15-minute first-round contest.

On Wednesday, the Chilean once again lost the first two sets, this time to Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin, but just like his previous round, he rebounded strongly to force the decider. However, this time he lacked the finishing touch going out to the World No. 90 in just under four hours.

Kukushkin’s 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6, 7-5 victory on Wednesday took him to the third round of the U.S. Open for the fifth time in his career. The 32-year-old who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last year, had also made it to the Round of 16 of the Australian Open in 2012.

A former World No. 39, the Kazakh converted 9 of 13 break point opportunities and won a total of 161 points against the World No. 19 on Wednesday.

Kukushkin, who had a relatively easy first round outing, where he defeated Hungary’s Attila Balazs in straight sets, will be aiming to finally break the Round of 32 jinx in New York.

Shapovalov v Fritz Prediction & Tip

Thompson is the higher ranked player, but Kukushkin is far more experienced. It will be a fascinating contest. Expect Kukushkin to head into the next round with a four set win.
