Sofia Kenin v Ons Jabeur Head to Head

As rivalries go, this is an old one but slightly one-sided too. Kenin and Jabeur first played each other at the ITF circuit in 2016, and since then have met a total of five times. Kenin leads 4-1 with Jabeur’s only win having come on clay in an ITF match in 2017.

There have been three matches on the WTA tour level too which Kenin has all won, including the most recent one at the Australian Open where she triumphed 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinal en route her maiden Grand Slam title.

Kenin 8-1 Since March

After winning the Australian Open earlier this year, Kenin went into bit of a rut, losing three of her next four matches including one at the Fed Cup. Opening exits at Dubai and Doha would have been a slight cause for concern.

However, since then, Kenin has now won a title in Lyon, which turned out to be the last tournament she played before the lockdown and then followed it up with a second round exit at the Cincinnati Open to Alize Cornet.

And now she has added a couple of wins here at the US Open, both of which have come in straight sets including one against talented youngster Leylah Fernandez in the second round. It was a straightforward victory for Kenin who faced no break points all match, needing just an hour and 22 minutes and taking full toll of her opponent’s second serves in which she won 17 of the 24 points.

The opposition pedigree will now rise up considerably but Kenin looks to have had all her bases covered. Interesting times ahead.

Jabeur Stretched Before Ease-Out

It’s been a pleasingly consistent season for Jabeur on hard court as she gone on to win 18 of her 25 matches so far including the latest one at the US Open second round. Jabeur was stretched in the first set by Kaia Kanepi but once she had gotten hold of the tie-breaker, the world number 31 carved out a bagel in the second.

The first set saw two breaks of serve for each player before it moved into the tie-breaker, including one with Jabeur serving at 5-4. In that shootout, Kanepi took a 5-3 lead at one stage and then had a set-point on serve at 6-5, but failed to capitalise on it. Jabeur sealed it 10-8.

The Tunisian had no such problems in the second as she raced off to a 6-0 win to seal her third round berth.

At the Australian Open, Jabeur needed defeat Johanna Konta, Caroline Garcia, Caroline Wozniacki and Wang Qiang to reach her last-eight stage – all players of fine pedigree. It’s been two easy opponents for Jabeur for now but the stakes suddenly go up with a third round opponent in the form of a world number four.

Kenin v Jabeur Prediction & Tip

Kenin is a favourite but Jabeur will believe she can usurp her challenge, especially if one sees the close nature of their previous meeting when the American won 6-4, 6-4. Speaking of beliefs, Kenin looks good to move forward but not before Jabeur has given it her all..

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
