Karolina Muchova v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

This will be the first match between Muchova and Cirstea with both players now gunning for that win which will take them to their maiden fourth round appearance at Flushing Meadows.

Muchova with Another Straight-Set Win

After having needed just two sets to get past Venus Williams in the first round of her campaign, Muchova looked to be in a hurry again in her second round match.

Muchova overcame an early break of serve in the first set to break right back twice in a row and capture the set 6-3 against the Russian Anna Kalinskaya. In the second set, Muchova had no difficulty holding on to her serve, facing no break-points but squandered a few opportunities to prevent the set from going into a tie-breaker.

In the tie-breaker, however, Muchova did not have too many difficulties moving past her opponent and setting up this third round match – making it the third successive time she has done that at the US Open.

With a quarterfinal showing at Wimbledon last year as her best ever Grand Slam performance and having made the semifinal of the WTA Elite Trophy after that, Muchova had shown gradual career momentum in 2019. This year, however, this is the first time she has won two successive matches in a tournament on tour, and would want to dearly make it count.

Cirstea Shocks Konta in a Thriller

Johanna Konta, ranked 50 places higher than Sorana Cirstea, hit more winners, won more points receiving, and more breaks of serve than her opponent and still lost the match! Nature of the game at times, but Cirstea won’t mind one bit.

Cirstea struggled to get going in the first set, with Konta winning it in 38 minutes and when the Brit took hold of an early break in the second set, things looked to be going in only one direction – Konta’s. Cirstea fought back to re-capture the break, then saved two break-points at 4-4, another couple of them at 5-5 to win the set in a tie-breaker.

And then in a hard-fought final set where the momentum fluctuated throughout, Cirstea needed more than an hour to complete a rousing 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 win.

Now, the Romanian world number 77 is gunning for her first Grand Slam appearance in the fourth round since the 2017 Australian Open.

Muchova v Cirstea Prediction & Tip

Muchova starts off the favourite here, a heavy one at that at 3/10 but Cirstea’s fighting capabilities cannot be questioned. Looking at a three-setter in this one too.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
