This will be the first meeting between the 24-year-old Russian and the 21-year-old Wolf.

Medvedev Advances With Ease

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev stormed into the Round of 32 at Flushing Meadows with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win over Australia’s Christopher O’Connell in the second round at the Louis Armstrong Stadium on Thursday.

Medvedev converted 4 of 17 break point chances, hit 32 winners and won a total of 104 points to dispatch the 116th-ranked Australian in two hours and 16 minutes.

Last year’s U.S. Open runner-up, Medvedev is yet to be tested in this year’s tournament, as he needed just an hour and 46 minutes to breeze past World No. 79 Federico Delbonis 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round on Tuesday.

Coming into the tournament with a 10-5 win-loss record this year, Medvedev is looking in ominous touch and is expected to make a deep run in the tournament once again. But this time he is having to do it in empty stadiums. Last year, it was the jeering of the crowds that fired him up each match and propelled him all the way to the final, which he lost to Rafael Nadal in a dramatic five-setter.

A winner of 7 ATP titles, Medvedev reached the last eight of the Cincinnati Open last month, where he lost to Roberto Bautista Agut. Awaiting him in the third round is a young American who would have loved the vociferous support of the home crowd had things been normal.

Wolf Making an Impression

It’s been an impressive start to the tournament for 21-year-old American Jeffrey John Wolf.

Awarded a wild card to the main draw of the tournament, Wolf upset 29th seed Guido Pella 6-2, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round on Tuesday and then followed it up with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 win over Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round on Thursday.

A winner of 6 Challenger titles, Wolf won two of those earlier this year before the break due to the pandemic. In the Cincinnati Open in August, he won both the qualifiers, but lost to Richard Gasquet in the first round of the main draw.

On Thursday, Wolf hit 50 winners and won 80% of his first serve in a comprehensive win over Carballes Baena.

Medvedev v Wolf Prediction & Tip

Wolf has caught the eye but does he have enough to beat Medvedev? He has been impressive and will test the World No. 5, but the Russian should get through this round in straight sets.

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
