Matteo Berrettini v Casper Ruud Head to Head
21-year-old Ruud is 1-0 against the 24-year-old Italian, winning their second round clash at last year’s French Open in straight sets.

Last year’s semifinalist Matteo Barrettini seems to have brought his 2019 form to this year’s U.S. Open as well, as the right-handed Italian reached the Round of 32 without dropping a set.
After having beaten Japan’s Jo Soeda 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, 6-4 in a two-hour and one-minute first-round contest, the Italian needed just six more minutes to dispatch France’s Ugo Humbert in the second round on Thursday.
The 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win saw Berrettini hit 17 aces and make just one double fault. He even clocked the fastest serve of the tournament so far, reaching 142 mph.
Ranked No. 8 in the world, Berrettini converted two of the six break point opportunities against Humbert and hit as many as 48 winners against the lefty’s 18. One of those winners hit around the net post from outside the court is already being hailed as the shot of the tournament.
A three-time winner on the Tour, Berrettini came into the tournament with a 2-2 record this year, but has hit form at Flushing Meadows almost immediately. Last year, he needed four sets to beat all his first three opponents at the U.S. Open. However, this year he has reached the third round without much fuss.
Next up is a tricky Norwegian who halted his run at Roland Garros last year and would be looking to do exactly that on Saturday.

Ruud on the Rise
It has been a good year for Casper Ruud and he has carried that form to the U.S. Open. Having endured a tough five-setter in the first round, the 21-year-old Norwegian dictated his terms against Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori, racing to a 6-4, 6-3, 3-2 lead before the World No. 92 retired sending Ruud into the third round of a Grand Slam for the second time in his career.
Ranked 37 in the world, Ruud struck 12 aces and converted four of seven break point opportunities in what was an easy second round outing. On Tuesday, Ruud needed to dig deep against Mackenzie McDonald, having to fight back from two sets down to score an incredible 4-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 first-round win over the American.
Earlier this year, Ruud became the first Norwegian to win an ATP title when he defeated Pedro Sousa in the final of the Argentina Open. He also reached the final of the Chile Open but finished runner-up to Thiago Seyboth Wild.
Berrettini v Ruud Prediction & Tip
Ruud has taken some giant strides over the last few years, but he prefers the clay court and most of his successes have been on his favoured surface. To win against Berrettini on the fast-paced hard court will be a tall order for the Norwegian. Expect the Italian to continue his march in the U.S. Open with a tough straight sets win.
