Khachanov Settling After Marathon Opener
Karen Khachanov is part of the now not so recently coined term, ‘Next Gen’ , i.e. the group of individuals billed to take on the mantle from the Big Three. Interestingly, most of the members of this group still remain alive in the tournament, i.e. Stefanos Tsitsipas, Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev among others.
A Masters 1000 win in Paris in 2018, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final ensured that Khachanov broke into the top ten of the ATP rankings. 2019 saw Khachanov make the quarter-finals of the French Open, but a poor end to the season followed ,including an early loss at Paris as he sought to defend his title. 2020 got off to another mixed start for the Russian, losing a thriller at the Australian Open to home favorite Nick Kyrgios.
With a big serve and a devastating forehand, Khachanov remains a huge threat on the faster surfaces, and was looking to return to consistent form and results at this year’s US Open.
His opener lasted just short of four hours, where he came back from two sets down to register a fine, five-set win over Jack Sinner in his first round match. Khachanov looked out of the tournament when he fell 3-6,6-7, behind but came back strongly to level the match, and then clinch it in the fifth.
A more clinical second round has done his confidence and his energy levels a world of good, going into a difficult round of 32 match.

Confidence Seeking Gasquet Victory For Young Aussie
Alex de Minaur burst on to the scene as a teenager in 2018, when he reached two ATP finals, in Sydney and at the Citi Open in Washington DC, where he was runner-up at both.
2019 was an even better year where he won three ATP titles – in Sydney. Atlanta, and Zhuhai. He was also a beaten finalist in the Swiss International, where he was defeated by Roger Federer, and was runner-up in the season-ending Next Gen ATP finals in Milan, after a shock loss to Jannik Sinner.
Last week, he won his first senior ATP doubles title, clinching victory in the Cincinnati Masters with his partner, Pablo Carreno-Busta.
The Aussie registered his best Grand Slam performance here in New York last year, when he reached the fourth-round, beating Kei Nishikori on the way, his first ever win over a top-ten ranked player. He was beaten, though, by Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets.
He advanced to the second round this time with a comfortable win over Andrej Martin of Slovenia, and followed it with a well-fought four round win against French veteran Richard Gasquet. De Minaur has looked comfortable and in good touch this week, and will hope to capitalize it on it fruther.
Khachanov v de Minaur Prediction & Tip
A very evenly matched contest lies ahead of us in the third round match. Khachanov’s big game versus de Minaur’s consistency and all round coverage leaves one with little to choose from.
It will come down to who performs better on the day. While de Minaur maybe a little more rested, the Russian’s big serving game may suite these hard courts just a little better.
A cracker of a match kicking off Labor Day Weekend; Khachanov to win a decider.
Tip: Khachanov to win in five sets: 6/1 (bet365)
