Elise Mertens v Caty McNally Head to Head
This will be the second match between Mertens and McNally. In their first encounter, which came at the Cincinnati Open of 2019, Mertens was stretched in the first round before running amock and routing McNally 6-0 in the second set.

Mertens Registers Another Straight-Set Win
After a final at the Prague Open and a semifinal appearance at the Cincinnati Open, Mertens looks to be set for another distant run in the US Open. She is now in round three following another straight-set win, finishing off Sara Sorribes Tormo in straight sets.
In a match which was spread across a couple of days because of rain, Mertens had won a roller-coaster of a first set 6-3 on Thursday. There were three breaks of serve for the Dutch player, and she looked to be in cruise control by the end.
Come Friday, however, and Tormo came out all guns blazing in a bid to take the match to a third set, and took an early 3-1 lead following a break of serve. An exchange of breaks followed which left Tormo leading 5-3 but an easy Mertens hold was followed by back to back breaks of serve from the world number 18 leading to a straight-set win.
While the victory was anything but straightforward it also showcased Mertens’ fighting strength.

McNally Continues to Better Herself
About a year or so ago, the 17-year-old McNally’s Grand Slam record read as follows. Two slams played, two exits at the qualifier stage.
It was at the Wimbledon last season she finally made it to the main draw, having won three qualifiers but that was followed by a first round defeat at the hands of Heather Watson.
At the 2019 US Open she went a step better, stunning Timea Baczinszky in her opener before taking a set off Serena Williams in the second round. Her journey, however, ended there.
Another qualifier at the 2020 Australian Open was followed by a first round win over Samantha Stosur before falling in the second round again.
And now, a few months on, McNally has surprised a few by storming into the third round. The American, who had entered the tournament on the back of two successive first round exits at the Lexington and Cincinnati Open and not too many gave her a chance.
Instead she has beaten Viktoria Kuzmova and Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first two rounds to make this her best Grand Slam performance. Add the fact she came back from a set down in the second round against Alexandrova and you are looking at someone who could make life difficult for her opponent.
Mertens v McNally Prediction & Tip
Mertens is a favourite here and while we think she should go through in straight sets, they could be fighting sets. Here’s a games market you could consider.
Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 4/7 (bet365)
