For Marton Fucsovics, the US Open was the one Grand Slam tournament which was leaving a huge dent on his resume. Since 2013 edition, the Hungarian has worked tirelessly in getting into the main draw. A combination of bad luck and inconsistency left him chasing for a spot in the main draw and that elusive first win.
Fucscovics famously took a set off Novak Djokovic in the first round of the 2018 US Open before losing in four sets. Eventually, he succeeded to score his maiden main draw win when he beat Hugo Dellien of Bolivia on Wednesday.
The unseeded Hungarian then weathered a wild battle which took nearly five hours to defeat last year’s semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov in five sets. In a match which featured 14 service breaks and numerous momentum shifts, it was the world no.66 who was the last man standing, scampering across the baseline to chase each and everyone of the Bulgarian’s shots.
The 28-year-old will now attempt to reach the second week of a Grand Slam for the third time (Australian Open 2018 & 2020) when he faces Frances Tiafoe of the United States.

Tiafoe Rallied To Beat Millman
Frances Tiafoe is healthy again after a bout of Covid-19. This will be the young American’s first appearance in the third round of the US Open after ousting Andreas Seppi and John Millman successfully.
Tiafoe, under the tutelage of new coach Wayne Ferreira, has worked on his fitness and foot placement on volleys immensely in order to stay in shape once the tennis season resumed. And it seemed the extra legwork paid off big time as he outlasted Australia’s marathon man Millman in the second round on Thursday.
Tiafoe, along with Taylor Fritz and J.J. Wolf are the lone Americans in third round after seven home players lost earlier in the second round. There might be a concern for the world no.82’s health coming into the match against Fucsovics after calling out the trainer for what looked to be a shoulder issue.
Fucsovics v Tiafoe Prediction & Tip
Fucsovics and Tiafoe are very good friends and frequent practice partners. The American labelled his opponent as ‘one of the most underrated players on tour’. That in essence is an illustration of how the Hungarian can put his opponents in uncomfortable situations with his relentless retrievals and pure ball striking. That is something Tiafoe lacks at the moment.
