Borna Coric v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between Coric and Thompson and that came at the Futures tennis level in 2013. Coric came back from a set down in a hard court tournament to win it in three sets.

It wouldn’t be easy to forget the Varvara Gracheva win over Kristina Mladenovic earlier in the tournament but Borna Coric’s victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round could come a close second in terms of comeback victories.

Down two sets to one, Coric was done for all money as he fell to 5-1 down in the fourth set of the encounter. From there on, Coric saved six match-points, broke Tsitsipas back thrice in a row to capture the fourth set and then took the final set into a tie-breaker which he won 7-4 to push the match into contention for the encounter of the tournament.

Even Coric admitted at the end of the match he was plain lucky to come back from being down 40-0 at 5-4 in the fourth set, while Tsitsipas tweeted it was the saddest and the funniest thing which had happened in his tennis career.

Coric had earlier started off his campaign with a straight set win over Pablo Andujar but needed to register another five-set win over Juan Londero, again from being two sets to one down.

Now he faces Thompson, who at 63rd in the world, is one of the lowest-ranked players remaining in the draw.

Thompson with a Career-Best Showing at a Major

The Aussie has been playing at the highest level since 2013 when he first played the qualifiers at the Australian Open but never in the ensuing eight years has he ever made the fourth round of a Grand Slam.

Till Friday that is.

Thompson wasted no time in getting past Mikhail Kukushin, winning his first straight-set win of the competition, to make it to his maiden round of 16. The 63rd-ranked Aussie, who has never won an ATP title before this, had earlier needed four sets to get past both, and Stefano Travaglia and Egor Gerasimov.

Having not even made the main draw of the Cincinnati Open last week after he fell in the qualifiers there, Thompson was on court for two hours and 23 minutes and hit 27 winners and 11 aces to win his third round match. And now for the first time in the tournament he faces a seeded player in the tournament.

Coric v Thompson Prediction & Tip

While Coric is an obvious favourite, starting out at 8/15 to win, he will be coming into the match having played a thriller like the one he did against Tsitsipas, which would have been both, mentally and physically draining. Can Thompson take advantage of that?

Tip: Four sets in the match: 13/8 (bet365)
