Serena Williams v Maria Sakkari Head to Head
These two have played each other twice in their careers so far, with both players, Williams and Sakkari having won once apiece.
Their first encounter came in the 2019 Hopman Cup in which Serena won in straight sets but in only match on the WTA tour, Sakkari needed three sets to usurp the might of her opponent. That came in the third round of the Cincinnati Open recently which was held in the same courts here in New York.

Williams Drops a Set But Comes Through
After breaking the run of a string of three-setters with a couple of straight-set victories, Williams finally dropped a set to Sloane Stephens in her third round match. It was in the first set where Stephens broke Serena twice with the senior American looking slugging on the court.
Her movements improved as the match went along while Stephens struggled to match up to her opponent’s pace, with Serena eventually winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The trouble for Serena has been the number of times she has been put under pressure in almost every match she has played since returning from the pandemic. Her second round win against Margarita Gasparyan aside, she has been under pressure almost every time and while she has come away a winner in all but one of those matches, there’s a feeling that invincibility aura around Serena has gone missing.
Having said that, at the end of the day it’s about finding ways to win and finding that extra gear when cornered. And champions like Serena have done that in the past too.

Sakkari Levels Her Best Grand Slam Showing…
…and will now look to go one better, knowing she has defeated Serena so recently.
Sakkari, seeded 15th, had never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam till before this season and now has done it twice in two appearances. At the Australian Open had an easier draw before she finally met her match in the form of Petra Kvitova in the fourth round.
This time around, after beating Stefanie Voegele, there have been a couple of tricky matches including one against upcoming American youngster Amanda Anismova but she has won both with aplomb. She dropped the opening set to Bernarda Pera in the second round before cruising through four sets and two wins.
Her showing against Anisimova was particularly telling, as she spent a mere 55 minutes in demolishing her opponent, 6-3, 6-1. Anisimova was allowed just one break point in the entire match and while she did break Sakkari, the Greek retaliated with five of her own.
Sakkari would know she was aided by her opponent’s unforced errors, 28 of them, which might not be the case against Serena but as far as confidence goes, she should be ready for her much-esteemed fourth round opponent.
Serena v Sakkari Prediction & Tip
Serena Williams starts off at 1/2 to win this and I am not sure there’s that much of a gulf between the levels of these two players at the moment. We are looking at Sakkari to make a fight out of this with over 21.5 games in the match or another potential three-setter.
Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
