Hubert Hurkacz v Joao Sousa Head to Head

In their only previous outing which came on the grass courts of Halle, Sousa had registered a straight-set win over Hurkacz last season.

Hurkacz 2-6 in Last Six Matches

Spread across the pre-pandemic season and the two tournaments he played after tennis resumed, things haven’t looked very good for the Pole. Hurkacz, who had won all his three matches in the ATP Cup while representing his country also reached the semifinal at the Auckland Open but following that, his record has plumetted.

It started with a second round loss at the Australian Open but following that, he won just one of his next four matches before the pandemic brought an early suspension of the season.

On resumption, Hurkacz started off with an appearance at the Cincinnati Masters where he was sent packing by John Isner in his first round match and after registering an opening win at the US Open he lost in the second at the US Open.

For someone who had won his maiden ATP title last year on the hard courts of Winston-Salem, this was bit of a surprise.

Now he moves on to the clay court season, a surface on which he played a handful of exhibition matches during the pandemic break. It’s not his most preferred surface but Hurkacz will hope to turn things around by getting into some sort of a rhythm.

Sousa Set to Play on Clay for the First Time in 2020

The Portuguese player hasn’t had the opportunity to feature on red dirt this year, but that could be to do with his choice given his poor record on the surface. Unfortunately for him, Sousa makes it to the clay season with barely any form under his belt.

It’s been that kind of a year for the 31-year-old, who hasn’t won a single match this season, losing seven main draw encounters. Yes, that’s right, Sousa has seven in a row, spread across eight months – starting with the Auckland Open and Australian Open right up to the Cincinnati Open and US Open recently.

And it’s not even like he has been playing any of the top players in every match, most of those losses have come against peers or players ranked lower than him.

Which is why, it might not be the easiest resumption clay either.

Hurkacz v Sousa Prediction & Tip

An eighth loss of the season looks almost certain for Sousa with Hurkacz expected to come through in straight sets.

Tip: Hurkacz to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
