Guido Pella v Feliciano Lopez Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and it came at the second round of the 2016 Australian Open. The five-setter was won by Lopez, with the first four of those sets going into tie-breaker.

Pella Finally Wins a Match

It was more than six months since Pella won a competitive match of any nature. Opting not to compete in any of the exhibition tournaments during the pandemic break, he came into the Kitzbuhel Open with a 6-7 win-loss record this season and a shabby 1-3 on clay.

And he finally won a match, defeating Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3, 6-0 to move into round two.

To underline the importance of that win, Pella’s only match since tennis returned came at the first round of the Australian Open and the world number 36 was stunned by JJ Wolf. Roll back a few months and Pella’s pre-pandemic season had ended on a sour note too as he lost back to back matches on clay – at Buenos Aires and Rio.

Which is why this was such a needed victory. The hunger looked like it was back and he would like to go from strength to strength through the rest of the clay season.

Lopez Wins in Straight Sets Too

38-year-old Lopez is the twilight of his career and in some ways his season hasn’t gone too differently from Pella. While he did play a few matches during the pandemic break, featuring at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown, his best result came in the first tournament he had played earlier this year.

At the Auckland Open, Lopez made it as far as the quarterfinal before losing to Hubert Hurkacz but that was followed by a string of poor results. A first round defeat at the Australian Open, another at Acapulco and a second round loss at the Montpellier Open mean he hasn’t had much of a traction and once he lost at the first round of the US Open it was always going to be difficult.

Which is why a 6-4, 6-3 drubbing of Pierre-Huges Herbert in the first round would have been pleasing.

Pella v Lopez Prediction & Tip

Pella is an overwhelming favourite to win this match against Lopez, and given how the Argentine went in his first round and playing on clay we are expecting a straight-set win for him.

Tip: Pella to win in straight set: 10/11 (bet365)
