Donna Vekic v Amanda Anisimova Head to Head

Given they are so closely matched on the rankings, it’s a surprise they haven’t played before. First meeting between Vekic and Anisimova this.

Vekic Finally Shows Some Old Self

On paper, bowing out of the US Open in the third round isn’t the best result one would expect from someone looking to break into the top 20, but Vekic’s recent form would have had most of her fans worried.

Since returning from the pandemic break, Vekic had played at Palermo on clay, where she lost to little-known Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the second round and then proceeded to crash out in her Cincinnati Open opener. That was a loss to Victoria Azarenka, who went on a winning-spree en route her Cincinnati title and US Open final but a 6-2, 6-3 defeat would have been tough to swallow at that stage.

Especially given Vekic hadn’t had the best of seasons even before the pandemic break, with first round losses at Brisbane and Doha, and not having done too much better than the Australian Open third round appearance.

Which is why, wins over Kristyna Pliskova and Patricia Maria Tig at the US Open before she fell to Tsvetana Pironkova – who made it to the quarterfinals – would have felt a bit of a confidence-booster.

A shift to clay will be a toughie but for someone who made her best play at the French Open last year, this would act as a challenge.

Anisimova Made the US Open Third Round Too

The highly-talented Anismova has been waiting for that breakthrough performance following her Bogota Open title win last year but hasn’t really been to get any big momentum-fuelled run in tournaments.

Earlier this year, the American did make it as far as the semifinal at the Auckland Open but an opening exit at both, the Australian Open and WTA Dubai wouldn’t have helped her confidence.

And then another defeat in the second round of the first tournament she played following the pandemic break, at the Cincinnati Open, meant she needed some kind of a run going into the rest of the season. She might not be fully satisfied with her third round appearance at the US Open – she is destined for a lot more – but it gives her some rhythm.

Now back on clay which is one of her more preferred surfaces – that Bogota win was on clay – she will hold bit of an edge on her opponent in this one.

Vekic v Anisimova Prediction & Tip

While on paper there’s not much to separate the two players, the surface allows Anisimova to start off as bit of a favourite here. Especially against Vekic, who is hunting for some form.

Tip: Anisimova to win: 8/11 (bet365)
