Cristian Garin v Borna Coric Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between the two players. On the previous two occasions when these two players have faced each other, both have won once.

They met last year on the grass courts of ‘s-Hertogenbosch where Coric won after three tough sets. Their second meeting was earlier this year when they met on the clay courts at the Rio de Janeiro. This time it was Garin who won and in straight sets.

Garin Back on the Comforts of Clay Courts

The 24-year-old Chilean has had a very impressive so far and after some average performances on the hard courts, he would be glad to return to the comforts of the red soil.

After a lacklustre start to the season, Garin went on a really impressive run on the South American clay courts. He had lost five out of his first six matches of the season when he arrived in Cordoba back in February. But from that point onwards he went on a ten-match winning run and back to back titles.

The Chilean had a breakthrough season last year where he began around the top 100 in the rankings but ended up winning two titles and achieved a career-best ranking five times. He could have achieved his best-ever ranking twice in the last month if he had performed better in Cincinnati or the US Open. He had two five-set thrillers at the Flushing Meadows where he went out in the second round to Mikhail Kukushkin.

This is the first time he is taking part in the event. And he would be hopeful of going deep and go past his current career-best ranking of 18.

Coric Coming off a Spectacular Run at the US Open

The 23-year-old Croatian put a troublesome summer behind him to make full use of a weakened field at the US Open.

Going into the US Open, Coric had been in the news for all the wrong reasons. First, he had taken part in the infamous Adria Tour where he was one of the players who was found positive. After that, he had a verbal spat on twitter with Nick Kyrgios of Australia. Then he got knocked out in the second round at the Cincinnati Open.

Thus a quarter-final run at the US Open came at a crucial time for him. He had to grind his way through to the last eight and came off two back to back five-set wins.

One of them was against much higher ranked Stefano Tsitsipas. But those marathon matches seemed to have taken too much out of him as he finally succumbed to Alexander Zverev in a four-set tie.

But he would take heart from that run nonetheless and would be looking to start the clay-court season on a strong note. This will be his fourth appearance in the tournament. His best showing in Rome came last year when he reached the round of 16.

Cristian Garin v Borna Coric Prediction & Tip

Garin had a forgettable hard court swing whereas Coric’s season turned on its head after a brilliant US Open showing. Despite the contrasting forms, Garin starts this match as a favourite. His record on the clay courts this year is really impressive. Coric on the other hand looked exhausted at the end of his US Open campaign.

Tip: Garin to win in straight sets: 2/1 (bet365)
