Barbora Strycova v Veronika Kudermetova Head to Head
The pair have never met each other in a competitive match. This will be the first ever meeting between them.

Doubles World Number One Postpones Her Retirement
2020 was supposed to be Strycova’s last season on the tour before she would hang up her boots. She had made her mind up pretty much after a dream Wimbledon 2019 where she reached the semi-finals in the singles and won in the doubles category.
Strycova wanted to take part in the Olympics this year and then bid farewell to the sport. But with the pandemic resulting in a season suspension and postponement of the Olympics 2020, she has decided to carry on for a little longer.
In fact, it is rare for her to play in the singles category these days. This will be only her seventh WTA Tour event participation of this year. She would be looking to improve on a below-par 3-6 win-loss record from those six events. On the other hand her doubles record this season has been impressive. She has a 21-5 win-loss record for the season which included a final appearance at the Australian Open.
This will be the seventh time that the Czech player will be taking part in the tournament. Strycova’s best showing so far remains from 2016 where she reached the last eight.

Kudermetova Looking For Consistency
The 23-year old’s season has fluctuated from one extreme to the other frequently. She has had some brilliant runs where she beat higher-ranked opponents and played some scintillating tennis.
Kudermetova has also suffered many shock defeats to much lower-ranked opponents though. She reached the semi-finals at Hobart at the start of the season and made it to the round of 16 at Dubai after a tough qualifying campaign.
She also reached the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Open and beat Karolina Pliskova, the world number three in the second round. But on the other hand, she has also gone out in the opening rounds at the Australian Open and the US Open. As a result, Kudermetova would be looking for a more consistent run going into the French Open.
Although clay courts is not her preferred playing surface she has a great chance to achieve her career-best ranking. This is her second appearance in Rome and last year she went out in the qualification round itself. Thus a deep run this week would do her confidence and ranking a world of good.
Strycova v Kudermetova Prediction & Tip
Both the players are coming into this match in indifferent form. Strycova on one hand would be looking to get as much practice on the clay court as possible before the French Open and Kudermetova on the other hand needs to find some consistency. Even though the Czech is ranked higher, the Russian holds the edge in the match having played more matches in the last month.
Tip: Kudermetova to win in straight sets: 2/1 (bet365)
